Market intelligence provided by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RCIS) offers the following views with regard to future housing requirements...
"Increased levels of house building have taken on a greater level of political importance during the last 2 years and continue to play a central role in the Government's plans to increase the affordability of housing. With a target of 2 million new homes to be built in England by 2016 and 3 million homes by 2020 in both the North and the South, the Government have increased their annual house building targets from 200,000 per year to 240,000 per year by 2016.
Development is targeted to take place predominantly on Brownfield sites and the Government hopes this expansion in house building will lead to energy efficient homes in sustainable communities.
House building is an essential part of creating affordable housing but will only come about if the Government can create the right conditions in terms of targets and funding and ensure that obstacles including the planning system and a skills shortage in the construction industry do not stand in the way of development."
